Wright Art Gallery to host internationally known graphic designer Luba Lukova

Luba Lukova The Delta State University Wright Art Gallery announced the week-long residency and an exhibition by internationally known graphic designer Luba Lukova during the month of February.  The gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, February 2, from 5 – 7 p.m. The exhibition of 24 large graphic images entitled “Luba Lukova: Social Justice and Other Works”  will be available for viewing through February 29.  The residency and exhibition was made possible by the generous contributions of the Delta State Dulce Fund (gift of Dr. Leila Wynn), Entergy, the Delta State First Tuesday Committee, Dean of Arts & Sciences Dr. Paul Hankins, and the Wright Art Center.
 
Internationally recognized, New York based Luba Lukova is regarded as one of the most distinctive image-makers working today. Whether by using an economy of line, color, and text to pinpoint essential themes of the human condition or to succinctly illustrate social commentary, her work is undeniably powerful and thought provoking. Lukova’s solo exhibitions have been held at UNESCO, Paris; DDD Gallery, Osaka, Japan; La MaMa, New York; Qbox Gallery, Athens, Greece; and The Art Institute of Boston. Her many awards include Grand Prix Savignac at the International Poster Salon, Paris; ICOGRADA Excellence Award; and Gold Medal at the International Poster Biennial, Mexico City. She has received commissions from The New York Times, Time, Adobe Systems, Sony Music, Canon, Harvard University, the Cultural Ministry of France, and the War Resisters League. Her evocative theatre posters have graced numerous stage productions in the U.S. and Europe. Luba’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Library of Congress, Washington, DC; and Bibliotheque nationale de France. She is the author of the critically acclaimed Social Justice poster portfolio containing passionate visual reactions to many of the pressing issues of our time. In 2010, publisher Clay & Gold released her new book Graphic Guts, featuring a comprehensive collection of her political posters. Luba holds an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from Lesley University, Cambridge, MA.

While here, Lukova will present public lectures as well as one-on-one critiques with students.  The campus and community is invited to the opening  and Lukova’s  presentations.
