The Delta Music Institute, a recording arts and music industry studies program at Delta State University, will host the second “Delta Night at Hal & Mal’s” on Saturday, January 28, beginning at 8:00 p.m. “Delta Night” will promote the music of the Mississippi Delta and Delta State’s music industry program by featuring performances by various musical acts, most notably Greenville native and country/blues music artist, Steve Azar. Azar, who wrote and performed the hits “I Don’t Have To Be Me ‘Til Monday” and “Sunshine,” is serving as artist-in-residence for the DMI at Delta State.

The DMI houses two cover bands of college students that will be performing at the event. Ol’ Skool Revue is an R&B/funk/soul/blues band playing the hits of Motown, Memphis, and Muscle Shoals while DeltaRoX delivers chart-topping songs from the genre of Classic Rock. The evening will be hosted by DJ Saxy,  and along with the bands, DMI singer/songwriters will showcase during the evening. Also scheduled to perform will be Mississippi native and DMI director, Tricia Walker, who returned to lead the Delta Music Institute after a successful 26-year career in Nashville as an award-winning singer/songwriter, producer, and music publisher.

“The Delta Music Institute at Delta State University is a growing program, offering courses in recording technology, music business, songwriting, production, and more, leading to a Bachelor of Science in Music Industry Studies degree,” says Walker. “Our studio facilities are second to none. That fact added into an interactive, small college experience with low student to instructor ratio, offers students a unique learning environment. Walker adds, “The DMI program is structured to offer students hands-on, project-based learning opportunities as often as possible, such as working in real recording sessions and at actual festivals and live venues. You can’t beat that for an educational experience.”

There will be a $5.00 cover charge for the “Delta Night at Hal & Mal’s” event. Hal & Mal’s is located at 200 Commerce St., in Jackson. For more information, contact Hal & Mal’s at 601-948-0888 or the Delta Music Institute at 662-846-4579.
