By November 28, 2011General

Grammy U members participating in the Toys for Tots Drive include, left to right, Scott Stogner of Saltillo, Joanna Sabine of Columbia, and Horace Willis of Arcola.

In conjunction with “A Mississippi Delta Holiday,” the Grammy U chapter of the Delta Music Institute at Delta State University will be hosting a Toys For Tots Drive on Friday, December 2, in the lobby of the Bologna Performing Arts Center on the Delta State campus. Grammy U members will be located in the BPAC lobby to receive new toys for children beginning at 8 a.m. until the completion of the performance that evening. All toys received will be donated to children in the local area by the Marine Toys For Tots Foundation. The mission of this event is to provide a service opportunity for Grammy U members by supporting the Marine Corps Toys For Tots Foundation.

Grammy U member Laeitta Wade from Greenville said, “The Toys For Tots drive hosted by Grammy U is important to me because when I was growing up, I always tried to give to kids I knew didn’t have much. This is a way for the students in Grammy U to give back to the community.”

The Marine Toys For Tots Foundation was founded in the fall of 1947 when Marine Major Bill Hendrick, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The pilot project was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign.

Please keep in mind that Toys for Tots only takes new unwrapped toys. For safety reasons, video, DVDs, CDs, and video games must be sealed and shrink-wrapped. Toy weapons of any kind (squirt guns, cap guns, play swords, etc), gift cards, food or candy cannot be accepted for Toys For Tots.

The Grammy University Network (Grammy U) is a unique and fast-growing community of college students who are pursuing a career in the music industry. The Recording Academy® created Grammy U to help prepare students for careers in the recording industry through networking, educational programs and performance opportunities.

The members of Grammy U look forward to working with the Marine Corps Toys For Tots Foundation to help Delta area children have a Merry Christmas.
