College of Business to host Lean Management seminar

By November 14, 2011General

Delta State University’s College of Business will host a Lean Management seminar on Thursday, November 17, at 1 p.m.. in Broom Hall 115. The seminar will feature Dr. Clay Walden, director and research professor at Mississippi State University’s Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems Extension (CAVSE) in Canton, and John Moore, manager of manufacturing and quality processes with CAVSE.

The seminar will begin with a one-hour lecture which will focus on Lean and Six Sigma and how drawing upon the strengths of each can empower continuous improvement within organizations. Following the lecture will be a two to three hour lean manufacturing workshop focusing on flow, waste elimination, and problem solving.

During the workshop, attendees will participate in the “Pipe Game” which is a hands-on simulation designed to teach the basic principles of lean manufacturing. The game begins with a typical manufacturing environment including measures that drive wrong behaviors, disorganization, and lack of communication. During the game, participants will be lead through the transformation of a manufacturing plant by driving out waste, creating a focused line, and forming assembly cells while improving quality, productivity, and increasing flexibility. Participants will receive a certificate at the completion of the workshop.

The seminar is open to all students, businesses, and community members. For more information about the seminar contact Dr. Clint Wood at 662-846-4180 or by email at cwood@deltastate.edu.
