By September 8, 2011General

The Delta State University Department of Music will present Dr. Kumiko Shimizu, associate professor of music, and Dr. Jung-Won Shin, assistant professor of music, in a faculty piano ensemble recital on Monday, September 19, 2011, in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center. The recital will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Last July, Dr. Shimizu and Dr. Shin were invited to present a piano ensemble recital at the College Music Society Biennial International Conference in Seoul, Korea titled “Korean and Japanese Works for Four Hands and Two Pianos: Cultures through Music. ” As an extension of the theme, this month’s recital will feature works for four hands and two pianos written by Korean and Japanese composers.

“Among various ways of learning different cultures, listening to music from different countries can be a rewarding experience,” said Dr. Shin. The program offers seasonal pictures of Japan painted in the sound, traditional tunes that convey the love and regrets of the Korean people, and unique sounds combined with influences of Western music. Dr. Shin said “I would love for everyone to come and please enjoy the beautiful melodies and appreciate the cultures that our world shares.”

The recital is free and open to the public. For more information, please call the Music Department at (662) 846-4615.
