Grenada native, Tomeka Harbin, has been named the new director of the Debt Education for Business Transformation and Sustainability (DEBTS) Program, an initiative of Delta State University’s College of Business. After graduating from Ole Miss with a Bachelor of Social Work she moved to Texas then returned to the Delta in 2002. Harbin earned a Master of Science in Community Development from Delta State and is currently working on a PhD in Human Capital Development from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Eager to jump in her new role as director of DEBTS, Harbin stated, “Any chance to help the community, I’m excited about it. We want to enhance businesses in the Delta to make them more profitable.” The DEBTS program serves to help small businesses with debt management training, offers several workshops, and meets the identified critical needs of disadvantaged micro-entrepreneurs; this is the second year of the program.

The first DEBTS meeting for the new term year was held last Tuesday in Broom Hall. The seven current participating businesses were able to meet and greet with facilitators, staff, and graduate assistants for an introduction to the program. In addition to an open discussion and question and answer session with the facilitators, participants received the curriculum for the year, learned the dates of the workshops and training, and were able to express their goals for the program. Participants will meet every two weeks and the training generally lasts up to seven months.
