Delta State Director of Bands Joe D. Moore (far left) and the Delta State Wind Ensemble performed a memorial concert remembering the 9/11 tragedy.

To mark the 10-year anniversary of the historic tragedy of September 11, 2001, a memorial concert was held at the Bologna Performing Arts Center on the Delta State University campus on Sunday.

“The purpose of today’s program is to remember the events of September 11 and to honor the victims and their families,” said Delta State Director of Bands Joe D. Moore. “We want to honor our firefighters, policemen, rescue workers, first responders and the personnel that were so vital in the rescue efforts and serve in those roles every day. And, of course, we want to honor our military personnel and our veterans.”

Delta State University President Dr. John M. Hilpert welcomed the crowd to open the ceremony and was followed by a musical program of patriotic selections performed by the Delta State University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Moore.  Cleveland Mayor Billy Nowell and Bolivar County Administrator Will Hooker each presented resolutions during the ceremony.

Military personnel and veterans were recognized as each of their service songs was played.

“We want to thank the Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce, the Exchange Club of Cleveland, Boy Scout Troop 23 and Cub Scout Pack 23 for participating.” said Moore. “Today’s memorial provides an avenue to recognize and honor all of these men and women and thank them for service and heroism.”
