Delta State’s Continuing Education to offer Adult Dance classes in the Fall

Delta State University’s Office of Graduate and Continuing Education will be offering an exciting line-up of dance classes during the Fall semester. Beginner Jazz, Advanced Jazz, Beginner Ballet, and Beginner Hip Hop will be instructed by accomplished dancer and teacher, Emily Tschiffely.

Tschiffely received her early dance training from the Washington School of Ballet and the North Carolina School of Arts.  She holds an MFA from the Tisch School of Arts at New York University and has worked as a professional dancer, choreographer, and teacher in New York City, the U.S. and internationally. Tschiffely currently teaches dance after school in several area schools.  She has  been awarded an Artist Fellowship for 2011 by the Mississippi Arts Commission for her choreographic work.

Adult Ballet (Beginner Level):
Ballet technique that follows the classical principle of Vaganova and Royal Academy training will be taught.  After barre exercises, students will execute adagio, turns, petite allegro, grand allegro, a waltz, and other classical steps in combination.  Ballet will be held from Noon to 1:15pm on Fridays, Sept. 9 – Oct. 14; Oct. 28-Nov. 18.

Adult Hip Hop (Beginner Level):
Come explore hip hop dancing that includes dropped weight movement, isolations, mixed meter physicality, pop&lock, break beats, and tricks.  It is a great way to burn calories while having fun, as well as improve your image for parties and weddings.  Hip hop will be held from 6:45 to 8pm on Wednesdays, Sept. 7-Oct. 12; Oct. 26 – Nov. 16.  

Adult Jazz (Beginner Level):
After a brief warm up that includes isolations, laterals, balance, and a stretch, students will delve into longer combinations and across-the-floor material that explores turns, jumps, leaps, rhythm, style and musicality.  Beginner Jazz will be held from 1:00 to 2:15pm on Mondays, Sept. 12 – Nov. 14.

Adult Jazz (Intermediate/Advanced):
After a brief warm up that includes isolations, laterals, balance, and a stretch, students will delve into longer combinations and across-the-floor material that explores turns, jumps, leaps, rhythm, style and musicality.  Execution, timing, and personal style will be studied alongside the physical movements of the choreography.  Advanced Jazz will be held from 10:45 to Noon on Fridays, Sept. 9 – Oct. 14; Oct. 28-Nov. 18.  

Each dance class will be held in Union 100A on the Delta State Campus and will cost $95 for each 10 session class.
