Delta State students Courtney Edmond, a child development major of Cleveland (left), and Felicia Jenkins, a English major of Shaw (right), are the 2011 recipients of the annual American Association of University Women (AAUW) scholarships. Susan Allen Ford (center), a longtime member of the Cleveland branch presented the awards.

In addition to her studies, Edmond also volunteers in the local Cleveland and North Bolivar schools as a reading tutor. In her application for the AAUW scholarship Courtney wrote, “I value education and learning and my true passion is working with children. Tutoring has been a rewarding experience.”  Prior to transferring to Delta State, she earned an associate arts degree, graduating with honors from Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale. She is also a member of Delta State’s Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the African American Student Council and is a member of the Mississippi Early Childhood Association.

Jenkins is working toward a Special Education minor. Her goal after graduation is to become a teacher, a goal which she is already fulfilling by volunteering as a tutor in both the Drew and Cleveland public school systems. Additionally, Jenkins works as a peer-tutor in the Delta State Writing Center.. Her 3.97 GPA has earned her recognition in the honors program, as well as membership in Phi Kappa Phi, Lambda Iota Tau, Phi Eta Sigma and Kappa Delta Pi. For the past three years she has served as the poetry editor for Delta State’s literary magazine Confidante. “I have always been dedicated to attaining a college education,” Felicia wrote in her application. “Throughout my career at Delta State, I have not only been a dedicated student, but also an active member in various campus activities and organizations.”

One of the founding principles of AAUW is to mentor and support young women in pursuit of their dreams and goals. To this end the members of the Cleveland AAUW branch are proud to honor these outstanding young women.

The awards were recently presented at the annual Humanities Honors Banquet held in the H.L. Nowell Union.
