Delta State celebrates National Nutrition Month 2011

By March 4, 2011General

To celebrate National Nutrition Month (NNM) in Delta State’s College of Education, the Nutrition and Dietetics students and faculty are partnering with staff of the Healthy Campus/Community Initiative to provide a host of informative and fun activities during the month of March.  Delta State Registered Dietitians and Dietetic students will be on site for these on-campus events.

National Nutrition Month (NNM) is a nationwide campaign that highlights the importance of making informed food choices and developing healthier eating and physical activity habits. Since 1973, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has organized the annual promotional event as a way to “improve our nation’s health through providing science-based nutrition information to consumers in a way that’s easy to understand and apply to their everyday lives,” states Judith C. Rodriguez, President of the ADA. The NNM theme for 2011 is “Eat Right with Color.”

This theme ties in perfectly with the new 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans that emphasize a plant-based diet, with smaller portions of lean meats, fish and chicken. The theme encourages people to make a rainbow on their plates with a colorful variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat proteins and dairy foods each day. During National Nutrition Month, registered dietitians across the country hope to help people filter through the clutter of nutrition information and misinformation and get down to the basics of eating a healthful diet in today’s world.
