Thanks to excellent community support, Saturday’s kick-off walk for the Walk it Out Cleveland program, sponsored by the Delta State University Healthy Campus/Community Initiative, was a tremendous success.  The initial walk targeted the Cleveland area schools and featured a walking competition. The top three schools with the highest percentage of participation and/or the highest number of total laps recorded were each awarded a grand prize of $500 towards health and wellness equipment for their schools. The top three school winners were Presbyterian Day School, Hayes Cooper Center, and Parks Elementary.

Despite moving indoors because of severe winter weather, the event drew an exceptional crowd with 555 participants walking a combined 20,611 total laps; 1,717.5 miles; and an average distance of 3.09 miles per participant.

The next event is scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 10 a.m. – noon at Pearman Elementary for the dedication of their new walking trail in memory of Trudy Erwin. There will be extra activities including the  jumbo bounce and face painting.

These walks mark the beginning of a year-long endeavor to create a healthier Cleveland. Monthly walks are being planned for the first Saturday of every month, many in conjunction with other Cleveland events. Locations will vary to highlight the large variety of wonderful walking facilities available throughout the community. So, Cleveland, get your shoes ready to take steps toward a healthier life and healthier community.  Bring your family and friends, and let’s Walk it Out Cleveland!
