Delta State’s Continuing Education to offer new line-up of classes for the spring semester

Delta State University’s Continuing Education will offer an array of dance classes for veterans and beginners, a GMAT workshop, and West African drumming and dance during the spring semester.

Belly Dancing:
Under the instruction of Teri Herron, participants will learn the basic moves of belly dancing and apply those moves to dancing while increasing core strength and endurance. No experience is needed! Recruit a friend or come make new friends!  The classes are scheduled to meet on Mondays, Jan 24-31 and Feb 7-28, in the Atrium of Kent Wyatt Hall on the campus. The beginner class will meet at 6 p.m. followed by the advanced class at 7 p.m. Cost is $50 per person which includes all six sessions.

Adult Ballet (Beginner Level):
Ballet technique that follows the classical principle of Vaganova and Royal Academy training will be taught. After barre exercises, students will execute adagio, turns, petite allegro, grand allegro, a waltz, and other classical steps in combination. Emily Tschiffely, experienced dancer/choreographer, will instruct this class  scheduled to meet from noon to 1:15 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 28, Feb. 4-25, and March 4, in room 100A of the H.L. Nowell Union on the campus. Cost is $50 per person which includes all six sessions.

Adult Jazz and Lyrical Dance (Intermediate/Advanced):
After a brief warm up that includes isolations, laterals, balance, and a stretch, students will delve into longer combinations and across-the-floor material that explores turns, jumps, leaps, rhythm, style and musicality. Emily Tschiffely, experienced dancer/choreographer, will instruct this class from 1:15 – 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Jan 25-26 and Feb 1-23, in Room 100A of the H.L. Nowell Union. Cost is $85 per person which includes all ten sessions.

Ballroom Dancing (Cha Cha, Tango, Swing):
Under the guidance and step by step instruction by Leslie and Ronnie Shive, participants in the Ballroom Dancing class will be introduced to the Cha Cha, Tango, and the Swing, The Ballroom Dancing class is scheduled to meet from 6-7:15 p.m., Tuesdays, Feb 1-22, in the Atrium of Kent Wyatt Hall. Come enhance your confidence on the dance floor. No experience is needed for this class, everyone is welcome. The cost is $115 per couple which includes all four sessions.

Dance Aerobics:
Come and Dance your way into Fitness!  Leslie Shive will be the instructor for the Dance Aerobics class scheduled to meet from 7:15-8:15 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 1-22 and March 1-8, in the Atrium of Kent Wyatt Hall. This class will get your heart pumping and your body moving. Bring a friend and enjoy a great workout. Cost is $50 for all six sessions.

West African Drumming and Dance:
Each group meets once a week from February – April and no experience or materials are needed. The drummers meet Monday evenings from 6-7 in Room 200 of Zeigel Hall on the campus. Led by Dr. Karen Fosheim, the drum group is a djembe ensemble that plays mostly traditional West African rhythms. Drumming is a great way to relieve stress and feel a sense of community.  

African Dance meets on Monday evenings at 7:15-8:30 in Room 100A of the H.L. Nowell Union. This traditional West African dance class is led by Cheryl Townsel.  Cheryl has 30 years of experience in African dance as a performer and teacher.  African dance is a fun way to get a good workout!  The cost to attend one of these classes is $25 per month.  Participants are open to take both the Drumming and the Dance classes.

GMAT Workshop:
Prospective MBA students will find that the training, assistance and preparation offered in this course will leave them ready to take the real test. Mary Ann Jabbour and Dr. Clifton Wingard will be the instructors for the class scheduled to meet from 3-6 p.m., on Mondays, Jan. 31, Feb. 7-28, and March 7, in Room 115 of Broom Hall on the campus. Cost for the six week course is $85 per person which includes all prep materials and books that will be given out during the first class meeting.
