Delta State to offer canoe expedition down the Rio Grande

Spring Break AdventureTodd Davis, outdoor recreation education director under the “Dave Heflin Professorship” in the Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Delta State, will be leading a student expedition down the Rio Grande River from Lajitas, Texas to Santa Elena, a 32 mile stretch in a remote section of Big Bend National Forest.  

The expedition will take place during Delta State’s spring break, March 12-20. Students participating in this once-in-a-lifetime adventure will enjoy an amazing journey through Big Bend National Park by canoe down the Rio Grande River observing amazing landscapes, water features, and living on personal provisions.

Participants will learn all necessary skills prior to departure – no experience is necessary.  Six days and five nights will be spent learning ‘leave no trace ethics,’ canoe rescues and skills, primitive camping, day-hiking and back-country cooking.
