Delta State to host 2011 High School Honor Band Clinic

By January 12, 2011General

Delta State University will host the 2011 Honor Band Clinic beginning Thursday, Jan. 20. The event’s culminating concert will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 22, inside the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

This year’s Honor Band is comprised 100 of the most talented students in Mississippi representing more than 30 of the state’s high schools. These students earned their place in the ensemble following auditions that took place during the fall 2010 semester.

The clinic begins with check-in at 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 21, in Zeigel Hall. The students will have their first rehearsal that evening followed by a choice of swimming, use of Wyatt gymnasium, or watching a movie.

On Friday, the students continue rehearsing in preparation for their concert on Saturday.

The year’s guest clinician is David Shaffer, Professor Emeritus of music from Miami University-Ohio, where he directed the Miami University Marching Band. He is a well known composer of works for wind bands at all levels.

He has chosen an exciting program for the Delta State Honor Band to be selected from the following: “Celebration Fanfare” by Steven Reineke, and four of his own works, “New World Variations,” “Purple Heart March,” “Slidin’ Stiehl,” and “Celestial Legend.”

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the music department at 662-846-4615.
