From left, Winford, Canady, as Terrance the rat, Wheezy Bear and Ruby Hall, school nurse for West Bolivar Elementary School, shared information about the effects of smoking and asthma management with a kindergarten class at the school.

Wheezy Bear, the official mascot for the School-based Asthma Management Program (S.A.M.) at Delta State University’s Center for Community and Economic Development made his first public appearance at West Bolivar Elementary School in Rosedale.

Over 300 students were entertained by a spectacular performance and story time with S.A.M. staff members Judith Winford, Asthma Resource Nurse; Brenda Canady, Community Health Worker, Antoria Pates, AmeriCorps*Vista member; and Alshunda Quinn, AmeriCorps/MDSC member.

S.A.M. is a project supported through the Mississippi Department of Health to educate students about asthma.

If you would you like to reserve Wheezy Bear for a school assembly or health fair, please contact one of S.A.M.’s staff members at 662.846.4784 or e-mail at bcanady@deltastate.edu.
