Hatfield and Ballard to present senior recital at Delta State

The Delta State University Department of Music will present Jennifer “JJ” Hatfield, flute, and Bradley Ryan Ballard, tuba, both music education majors in their senior recital at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, in the Recital Hall of the Bologna Performing Arts Center.

Dr. Kumiko Shimizu, faculty accompanist and assistant professor of music at Delta State, will serve as collaborative pianist for the recital.  

Hatfield is the daughter of Mark and Karen Hatfield of Booneville. She is a student of Dr. Shelley Collins, assistant professor of flute at Delta State University.

At Delta State, Hatfield has been drum major of the Pride of the Delta Marching Band and principal flute of the Wind Ensemble. She has also been an active member of the Flute Ensemble, New Music Ensemble, and the Delta State Woodwind Quintet.

Hatfield was selected as a participant in the distinguished Delta State Music Department’s annual Honors Recital for the past two years. In addition to this, she has performed in master classes for flutists Tadeo Calheo, Danilo Mezzadri, and Lisa Bost, and has also won multiple awards in various categories of the collegiate competitions of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association.

Hatfield will be performing the works of J.S. Bach, Katherine Hoover, Georges Hüe, and Ian Clarke.

Ballard is the son of Stan Ballard and Kelly Ballard Olive Branch. He is a student of Dr. Douglas Mark, assistant professor of music at Delta State.

Since coming to Delta State, Ballard has participated in the wind ensemble, the marching band, the low brass ensemble, the Delta State Chorale, and the Delta State Chamber Singers.  He is currently serving as president of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity.  
            
He will be performing compositions by Paul Hindemith, Gustav Mahler, Alec Wilder and Andrea Catozzi.
