Delta Music Institute to host 2010 Hip Hop Conference

The Delta Music Institute (DMI), a recording arts and music industry studies program at Delta State University, will host the fourth annual Delta Hip Hop Conference entitled “Dare 2 Be Different,” Thursday, Nov. 18, on the campus.
 
The conference will begin at noon on the Quad with the creation of an original piece of hip-hop art by Delta State artist Cary Harris.

Afternoon events begin in DMI’s Studio A at 3:15 p.m., with a screening and discussion of the BET documentary, “My MIC Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip Hop.” The film will be followed by two panel discussions, beginning at 4:15 p.m., “Who Am I?: How To Stand Out From The Crowd” and “Pick Me: How To Present Music to DJs and Club Owners.” Panelists include Bigg V, Mr. Frog, Blake Ale, Jarvis Farmer, and Miz Smurff.

Hip Hop music writers and producers will have an opportunity to have their work critiqued by industry panelists, beginning at 5:45 p.m., in DMI Studio A.
 
The conference will conclude that evening with a hip hop music and dance showcase performance, beginning at 8 p.m., in DMI Studio A. Hosted by DJ Saxy and Joobs, the showcase will feature musical artists Miz Smurff, Zephyr Ellis, MBM, and NeNe Sum Serious. Hip Hop dance team, Inovation will conclude the conference events.

All 2010 Delta Hip Hop conference events are free and open to the public. The community is invited to attend the conference and participate in discussions about the vibrant musical form of hip-hop and the culture surrounding it.

The Delta Music Institute is a first step towards a broad program in recording arts and music industry studies. It began with a generous donation by Fred Carl of the Viking Range Corporation. The focus of the DMI is to provide students with a broad and thorough education in the technological, business, and creative areas of the music industry.
