Mealer/Cleaver & Other Arcadian Video Tapes

The Wright Art Center Gallery at Delta State University will open its 2010/2011 season with a solo exhibit entitled “Mealer/Cleaver & Other Arcadian Video Tapes,” by multi-talented artist J.D. McPherson, Jr.

Opening with a public reception from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12, the exhibit will remain in the gallery though Oct. 8.

McPherson is an interdisciplinary artist based in Broken Arrow, Okla., whose work encompasses video, installation, performance, curating and music.

The exhibition includes new work created specifically for the Wright Art Center as well as selections of recent video work. The title for the exhibition derives from the Gospel of Thomas verse 77: “Cleave the wood and you will find me; lift the stone and I am there.” Drawing inspiration from Coptic texts and Zen practices, these selections investigate spiritual development through visuals metaphors of physical labor, farm equipment, and card magic.

McPherson received his M.F.A. from the University of Tulsa in 2008. He has participated in numerous groups shows, has had several solo exhibitions, most recently at Ligget Studios in Tulsa.

As musician, he has performed internationally as a solo artist and with various bands.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday from 8 a.m. – 8:30 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Closed on weekends and holidays.
