Janice Wyatt Mississippi Summer Arts Institutes PLUS Camp presents performance

By July 15, 2010General

Campers attending the 12th annual MSAI PLUS Camp at Delta State University will present a free performance for the public at 10 a.m., July 17, in the Bologna Performing Arts Center (BPAC) on the campus.

The performance will include a choreographed medley of songs from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. Campers will also sing “Hoe-Down Throw-Down,” and a Miley Cyrus favorite, “Party in the USA.”

A total of 100 campers ages 5-12 are participating in the 2010 PLUS camp. These campers come from the Delta, from other regions in Mississippi, and from other states in the United States. The camp even has two campers from Belgium who attended last year and, as many of the campers do, timed their visits to their grandparents to be able to return to the 2010 camp.

The MSAI PLUS camp for elementary aged children was established in 1999 to encourage participation in the art of performance. Over the years the content of the camp has grown to include classes in props; puppetry; storytelling; and writing, as well as musical and choreography rehearsals to learn the performance elements. The camp strives to give opportunities to develop and learn about several artistic disciplines related to the performing arts and to give these young people an opportunity to sing and dance on the “big stage” of the BPAC.

“Through the experience of this camp, we are hoping to build on the natural creativity of children.  We are giving them an outlet for their musical talents, while also encouraging them to use their imaginations as they create puppets and learn how to develop stories and plays,” says Tennie Lester, camp director.  “These children are developing an appreciation for live theatre, and they will become the future audience of the BPAC.  Perhaps someday, we might even see some of these campers performing as adults on the BPAC stage.”

Faculty members include Kathy Mills–Hull from Nashville, Tenn., musical director; Mandy Bell from Grenada, choreographer; Terry Baird from Cleveland, props; Doris Jones from Madison, storytelling; Celeste Aguzzi from Cleveland, puppetry; and McLeod Satterfield from Sugar Land, Tex., writing. The camp also employs several area young adults as teacher assistants and counselors.
