Delta State Named to Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service

By July 9, 2010General

Delta State University has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll joining Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi as the only public universities in the state to be recognized for this honor

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary, innovative, and effective community service programs.

Delta State’s Delta Center for Culture and Learning through its Office of Student and Community Engagement and the Delta Volunteers (a United Way agency) sponsored service events in January to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and in March, when it offered an Alternative Spring Break service project. The Delta Center also sponsored the Lighthouse Heritage After-School Program at D.M. Smith Middle School, which provided tutoring, arts and heritage activities to low income students. Delta State has long been a leader in service-learning and civic engagement in the community. Last year, 1,379 students clocked 56,833 service hours.  Delta State also offers around 25 courses each semester that incorporate service into the curriculum. For more information about the Delta Center call 662-846-4311.

"I am pleased that Delta State has, once again, been recognized to receive this prestigious honor” stated Dr. John Hilpert, President of Delta State University. “Receiving national recognition is very rewarding and confirms the strong commitment of our faculty and students to promote community involvement and participate in such worthwhile initiatives.”

The Honor Roll recognizes a wide diversity of higher education institutions for their community service programs, practices, and community partnerships. It is administered by Learn and Serve America at the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development. Many higher education associations, including Campus Compact and the American Council on Education, also support and promote the Honor Roll.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. The Corporation administers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America, a program that supports service-learning in schools, institutions of higher education and community-based organizations.
