Judy McNeece(at left), of Belden, co-president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Mississippi, presents Dr. Susan Allen Ford, Delta State professor of English and Writing Center coordinator, with the Woman of Achievement Award.

The Woman of Achievement Award was first awarded in 1985, as a way for AAUW of Mississippi to recognize the contributions of women in Mississippi to furthering the priorities of the American Association of University Women.

“We appreciate Susan’s commitment to AAUW as she carries on the tradition of outstanding women from the Cleveland Branch. [There are quite a few!] I’m sure she has been a positive influence on students and colleagues at Delta State,” said McNeece regarding Ford’s award.

Ford began her teaching career at Delta State in 1983, as an adjunct instructor and part-time writing lab assistant. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1989, and was promoted to assistant professor. In 1994, Ford was promoted to professor of English at Delta State University. She is editor of the Jane Austen Society of North America journals.
The award was presented during the American Association of University Women (AAUW) State Convention, April 16 and 17, held in the Baioni Conference Center of Broom Hall on the Delta State University campus.
The Woman of Achievement Award is presented annually by AAUW Mississippi. Any woman residing in Mississippi will be eligible to receive the award. The quality of the nomination is considered along with these activities: commitment to women’s equity; commitment to education; contributions to society; contributions to AAUW priorities.

AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. Since 1881, AAUW has been one of the nation’s leading voices promoting education and equity for women and girls. Currently, it has a nationwide network of 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 500 college/university institutional partners. Delta State has had an AAUW branch since 1953.
