In the state of Mississippi there are 1,730 licensed child care centers and one of those licensed centers is the Delta State University Hamilton-White Child Development, which is part of the Division of Family & Consumer Sciences in the College of Education.

The Center serves as a laboratory school for students majoring in Child Development. As part of a commitment to provide high-quality hands-on experiences for the students, as well as early education and care for children and families, the Center participates in the Mississippi Child Care Quality Step System (MCCQSS).

The MCCQSS is a voluntary rating system for licensed child care providers in the state of Mississippi. The Mississippi Child Care Quality Step System is funded through the Office for Children and Youth (OCY) of the Mississippi Department of Human Services. Through this program, any licensed center has the opportunity to earn one to five stars based on five requirements. Those five requirements are administrative policies, professional development, learning environment, parent involvement and evaluations.

In October 2008, the Hamilton-White Child Development Center enrolled in the MCCQSS program. On February 8, 2010, the Center was notified that it had earned a rating of four stars. The only five star center is the one where the system was initiated. To date, there is only one five star center and only four other centers that have earned the four star rating.

“The teachers at the Child Development Center truly deserve this honor,” said Leigh-Anne Gant, director of Preschool Programs and Instructor in Family and Consumer Sciences. “They work so very hard to provide the highest of quality care to the students and families we serve every day. I am very proud to say that I work with a great group of dedicated staff.”
