Thanksgiving Blues Blowout scheduled for Nov. 26

By November 9, 2009General

Nellie Travis

Nellie “Tiger” Travis, Blues diva originally from Mound Bayou and now the darling of the Chicago Blues scene, will be performing Thanksgiving night, Nov. 26, at the Expo Center in Cleveland in a Thanksgiving Blues Blowout.

The doors will open at 4 p.m. with acts beginning at 5 p.m. Other acts featured will be Billy Smiley, Big T and the Family, Pearl Street Jumpers, Ol’ Skool Revue, Jerry Fair and the Delta Blues Crew and Super Jock, the D.J.
Travis will headline the blues show along with the five other blues acts. She began her love affair with singing at church functions, weddings and talent competitions in Mississippi.  During the mid 80’s she was the lead vocalist for the Mississippi based group “Ssippi,” opening for acts from Dionne Warwick to Ray Charles. Since moving to Chicago in 1992, Travis has been singing across the country.
Not content to just stay on stage, Travis’s style is audience involvement. She keeps the room alive, often leaving the bandstand to get people involved in the show. It is not unusual for audience members to find themselves with a microphone in front of them or dancing on the bandstand.
This event is free to the public and the doors will open at four o’clock with the first act on stage at 5 p.m. There will be a $10 charge for coolers, but you can bring your own beverages. Food and drink concessions will be by The Senator’s Place.
This event is sponsored by Senator Willie Simmons and the Delta Center for Culture and Learning at Delta State University.
