‘Harvard Negotiation Basics’ course to be offered in Clarksdale Nov. 14

By November 2, 2009General

Harvard Negotiators (HN) an organization at Harvard Law School will offer a one-day course entitled “Harvard Negotiation Basics” on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Coahoma County Higher Education Center, 109 Clark Street in Clarksdale.

The workshop can also be taken for college credit or continuing education credit through Delta State University.

The $10 registration fee covers simulated negotiation cases, tailored instruction and course materials. To register for credit or learn more about the cost of taking the course for credit, contact Delta State’s Graduate and Continuing Studies at (662) 846-4700.

Due to limited space, early registration is encouraged.

The event is being coordinated by the Delta Directions Consortium, the Institute for Community-Based Research at Delta State University, and the Tri-County Workforce Alliance.

In this condensed full-day program, participants will learn the essential skills that will help make them more effective negotiators. Through a combination of informative lectures, interactive negotiation exercises, and group discussion, participants will be actively challenged and engaged.

Each participant will learn:
  • The common reasons why negotiations fail;
  • A framework for thinking about and understanding negotiation;
  • A step-by-step method for preparing for upcoming negotiations;
  • Ways to create more value in negotiations;
  • Ways to be assertive without being aggressive; and,
  • Ways to protect oneself from being taken advantage of or cheated.

Over the course of the eight-hour program (there will be a one-hour break for lunch) participants will have many opportunities to engage in class discussion and work directly with their instructors and classmates as they develop their negotiation skills together. It is our experience that this interactive setting helps participants walk away with a much stronger grasp of the material and skills being presented (as well as a stronger network of personal and business contacts).

Harvard Negotiators (HN) is focused on negotiation and dispute resolution.  Using core concepts developed by faculty at Harvard Law School and researchers at the Harvard Program on Negotiation, Harvard Negotiators design systems for dealing with internal disputes, conduct conflict assessments of complex real-life situations, and provide training for negotiators of all skill levels.
