Delta State hosts third Gear Up camp

By July 8, 2009General

The campers are pictured in front of the old Bryant store in Money, Mississippi, north of Greenwood.  Fourteen year old Emmett Till supposedly whistled at Carolyn Bryant in this store in August of 1955, and his subsequent murder is widely viewed as one of the events that sparked the Civil Rights Movement.  Pictured with the students are Art Coordinator Pat Brown (far left) and Delta Center Program Coordinator Lee Aylward (in white).

The Delta State University Delta Center for Culture and Learning recently hosted its third Gear Up enrichment program for the summer which included a week of various activities focusing on the Delta’s cultural heritage.

The program was funded by the Institutions of Higher Learning, and was a residential camp for rising eighth graders. LaKendra Jones coordinated the camp for the Delta Center.

Students from Chastain and Siwell Middle Schools in Jackson, Tupelo Middle School, Grenada Middle School, Inverness Middle School, D.M. Smith Middle School in Cleveland, Yazoo County Middle School, Moorhead Middle School, and Ruleville Middle School participated in the camp.
