Masters of Education in Counseling

A Master of Education degree is available in two areas in the division of Counselor Education:

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

School Counseling

These degree programs are accredited by CACREP (Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs), a specialized accrediting body that promotes the advancement of quality counselor education programs.

Mission

The faculty and staff of the Delta State University Counselor Education Program through teaching, training, supervision, and experiential activity develop ethical, competent, and culturally sensitive counselors who are prepared to work in school or community settings. Program faculty seek to strengthen the profession by modeling for students the professional expectation of continued growth and learning, interpersonal awareness, and practical application of sound principles and practices in their work as professional counselors. Candidates for the program must meet the following requirements:

  1. Complete the Online Application with Graduate Studies
  2. Minimum 2.75 GPA (cumulative) or 3.0 on last 60 hours of undergraduate work.
  3. Official report of a test score, within the last 5 years, on one of the following tests:
    1. Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
      • Minimum raw score: 30
      • Minimum scaled score: 380
    2. Graduate Records Examination (GRE)
      • Minimum score: 286 on the combined verbal and quantitative sections
    3. Praxis Core
      • Minimum score: 150
  4. Application Deadlines:
    1. June 30th for Fall admission
    2. November 15th for Spring admission
  5. Typed essay that reflects the applicant’s rationale for pursuing a career in counseling and demonstrates an awareness of the following characteristics that are necessary for becoming an effective counselor:
    1. Ability to work well with others in a caring and authentic manner
    2. Awareness of cultural issues and of being non-judgmental
    3. Possession of integrity and ethical conduct
    4. Commitment to professional developmentThe essay (rubric in Appendix) is divided into 5 basic sections, each one designed so that the first few words of each segment are provided to get you started in the correct direction. Complete each segment (typewritten) until you are confident that you have provided clear and comprehensive responses.

  1. Three recommendation forms (Relatives may not complete the recommendations)
    1. One completed by a work supervisor or someone familiar with the applicant’s work performance and ethics;
    2. One completed by a faculty member from the applicant’s most recent academic program of study;
    3. The third completed by anyone who can attest to the applicant’s ability and/or character.
  2. Group Interviews with faculty
  3. Applicants who are non-native English speakers must have a minimum score of 90 on the TOEFL.

Upon completion, students are prepared for employment in the community, private practice, or agency setting.

Students are responsible for making sure they have met all graduation requirements. Students must familiarize themselves with the DSU Graduate Academic Catalog under which they entered the Counselor Education Program.

Academic advising is mandatory for Counselor Education majors. All Counselor Education majors are assigned an advisor. The advisor list is posted below as well as in the Counselor Education suite on the third floor of Ewing Hall. Students must see their assigned advisor prior to registering for courses. Advisors will have sign-up sheets posted outside of their offices a week before pre-registration. Students must sign-up for an appointment no later than 3:00 P.M. the day prior to the scheduled meeting. Students are responsible for updating their curriculum sheet and bringing a tentative list of courses to their advising appointment.
