Microsoft Outlook Training Events begin
September 12

To kick off the fall semester, OIT is offering several informative sessions on Microsoft Outlook for faculty and staff. These sessions are instructor led and designed to provide an overview of the basic functions of Microsoft Outlook. The presentation session will run around 45 minutes, with a 15 minute Q & A session to follow each class. These events are being held in Jobe 202 which allows for an informal environment of up to 50 participants. Network Outage

OIT must perform mandatory maintenance and updates on campus servers and other equipment.  In order to minimize disruption to the campus as a whole, this window has been scheduled for Friday, September 15, 2006 from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  This outage is part of an ongoing maintenance plan scheduled every third Friday of every month. Software updates for all Windows servers will be applied and some minor hardware changes will be implemented.  During this time, you may experience an interruption of service. Applications that may be affected include network access, network printing, internet access, web applications, and One Card access.

OIT does not loan equipment to students.

Students are not authorized to reserve/checkout equipment. Students needing equipment for official University events must have their faculty/staff sponsor request the equipment on their behalf. The sponsoring party assumes all responsibility for the safe return of the equipment.  In the event damage or loss occurs the sponsoring party will be held financial liable for the replacement of the equipment. Students must leave a copy of their valid DSU Okra ID Card with the OIT Help Desk at the time of checkout. Equipment will not be loaned to students without appropriate sponsor authorization and signatures and verification from the sponsor that the use is authorized for an official DSU event. OIT reserves the right to refuse service to those groups/individuals that consistently abuse or take inadequate care of University resources.  For more information, see OIT Media Reservations.

Google Provides Free PDF Downloads of Classic Books

As of August 30, Google has decided to launch its free book PDF download site to the world. Previously, Google has allowed web searchers to only view sections of scanned books, but they have made the decision to allow downloading and printing of many classics that are considered to be in the public domain and no longer under copyright. The available offerings include classic novels such as Dante's "Inferno". This controversial decision has many in the academic world singing their praises while two lawsuits have been filed by authors and publishing companies. For more information on the site and the controversy, see Tech News World and California Business Chronicle .

Wireless Access Points are Prohibited

To protect the security and performance of the campus network, unauthorized wireless access points are prohibited on the Delta State campus. Unauthorized and improperly secured wireless access points can compromise the security and performance of the campus network. These devices provide easy access for intruders to steal passwords, destroy data, and use University network and Internet resources for unauthorized purposes. Additionally, when these types of devices are connected to the network, legitimate devices will begin to experience connectivity issues resulting in slow or unavailable services, including email, network access, and printing. These devices can have serious repercussions in residential halls, computer labs, offices, and all other campus locations.

The University has invested considerable monies to ensure that everyone has a safe, secure, and fast network connection. If an unauthorized device is connected to the campus network, OIT will immediately shut down the network connectivity to the device and contact the respective owner. The network port will not be reactivated until such time that the device is removed from the network. OIT appreciates your assistance in ensuring that a safe, reliable network is available for all of the campus community 24/7.

Wireless Service Available in the Campus Union
Wireless network connectivity is available in the Union! More locations will be deployed as funding cycles permit.
