Homeland Security Issues Unprecedented Statement to “Fix your Windows Operating System”– NOW!

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement this week urging all Microsoft Windows users to apply Microsoft's MS06-040 patch immediately.  Home users may prefer to use the Microsoft Updates site.   This is an unprecedented move by Homeland Security, but it is feared that this vulnerability could have the same devastating consequences as the MSBlaster worm that occurred in 2003.  Known as the “Blaster” worm, the 2003 outbreak took down banks, industries, and educational institutions for days and in some cases weeks.  Microsoft issued a statement that this update is critical for all versions of Windows.   Campus machines automatically download Microsoft updates nightly so most campus machines should have the latest security patches installed.  If you have questions, contact the Help Desk for more information.

Can't reach your favorite site? Spyware may be the problem

If you find you are having problems accessing sites on the Internet or downloading files or information from the Internet, the culprit may be spyware. Spyware is defined at Wikipedia as a type of program that watches what users do with their computer and then sends that information to a site over the internet. Spyware generally gets on your machine by simply browsing the Internet. The effects of spyware can be disastrous, ranging from slow processing to the inability to get to any Internet sites. Spyware uses up the resources on the machine and can eventually cause the machine's processing to slow to a crawl where you cannot use the applications on the system or worse the computer locks up or crashes frequently. Spyware also prevents you from being able to access certain sites, download information from the Internet, or even worse sometimes redirects your preferred homepage to another homepage. Spyware can be difficult to remove but there are some tools available to the public that can help to remove spyware from your machine. Check our Adaware or Spybot for some good resources for homes users that can help to keep your machine clean of spyware.

Banner 7.x Upgrade was a success!

OIT had a very busy weekend but we are very pleased with the outcome of the extensive efforts that were made by our team in conjunction with our Sungard support team.  The Banner 7 upgrade has been completed.  Everything transitioned very well with only a few items that needed additional work.  We are hopeful that you are finding all of the processes available and running, albeit in a different format.  Banner 7 will provide a more “user friendly” environment based upon the “windows” methodology.  This will allow for multiple forms to be open and work to go on across multiple forms simultaneously.  It will take time to get used to the new environment.  OIT hopes to begin some training sessions in conjunction with the department functional experts in the very near future.  As you work in Banner 7, should you find anything that is off, missing, or not working please let us know.  We want to thank you for your patience and support during this transition.

Tips and Tricks from Microsoft

5 tips for top-notch password security

Whether it's a few PCs or hundreds on your network, there's one thing that can separate your system from being compromised: a great password.

Why? Hackers want access to anything and everything. If they can guess your user name and password, you might as well have given them your wallet and the keys to your building.

Campus Security Tips

  • NEVER share your University password with anyone, even someone you think you can trust.  Sharing your password provides individuals with access to information that only you should see.  If you do share your password and someone logs in using your username/password, the results could be disastrous.

  • The best practice for all offices and technology-rich classrooms is to make sure that you always lock the facility when leaving.  As we increase the technology presence on the campus, this is becoming even more important.

Campus Technology Projects Update

  • Preparation of the campus instructional labs for the Fall semester is underway and should be completed next week

  • The Language and Literature Lab relocation to Roberts-LaForge Library is in process and should be finalized next week

  • The Delta Music Institute Lab creation is underway and furnishings and equipment should be arriving soon

  • Kethley Renovation continues with digging going on throughout the week
