August 4-7: Union Building Network Outage

With the ongoing construction in the Union building, it is necessary for the OIT offices of Telecommunications and Network Services to restructure the network closets in the facility. In order to perform this restructuring, all network services to the Union facility will be unavailable on August 4 beginning at 7:00 a.m. We anticipate that services will be restored beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, August 7. This will affect all services to all offices in the building, including Exchange mail services, Internet Access, and Active Directory. Additionally, with the Banner outage, Banner will not be available. The only facility affected will be the Union building. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we strive to improve services on the campus.

Belhaven Employee Robbed and Employee Data Stolen

Data security is of significant concern at Mississippi institutions. Employees removing data from the campus via personal laptops or computers don't always understand the risk involved. Belhaven College announced that an employee was robbed in the campus parking lot on July 19 and the computer belonging to the employee was stolen in the robbery. This laptop contained the names, social security numbers, and contact information for college employees, putting all of the 300 affected employees at risk. Although Belhaven hopes that security measures in place on the laptop will prevent any potential identify theft, there is no guaranty that the thief will not uncover the data. Employees at the institution are being urged to open new banking accounts and to watch their credit reports carefully. For more information, see the following articles.
