Network Outage

OIT must perform mandatory maintenance and updates on campus servers and other equipment.  In order to minimize disruption to the campus as a whole, this window has been scheduled for Friday, July 21, 2006 from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  This outage is part of an ongoing maintenance plan scheduled every third Friday of every month. Software updates for all Windows servers will be applied and some minor hardware changes will be implemented.  During this time, you may experience an interruption of service. Applications that may be affected include network access, network printing, internet access, web applications, and One Card access.

SPAM Filtering at DSU

The Delta State Barracuda SPAM firewall reports that approximately 85% of all email attempts to the DSU campus are the result of spam. As diligent as the Barracuda appliance is, more and more spam senders are becoming increasingly creative in ensuring that their messages reach the largest possible audience. At present, the Barracuda blocks those messages that are known to be spam and flags other suspected emails as [Bulk] messages in your inbox. A message that is preceded by [Bulk] has been interpreted by the Barracuda appliance as a possible spam message, but the message may contain information that you personally do not consider spam. The [Bulk] messages have passed through both virus protection and spam filtering and it is up to you to determine if the message is relevant to you. If it does not, then you have several options available. You can scroll to the bottom of the email and look for the “unsubscribe” option and follow that process; you can delete the message from your inbox without unsubscribing, or you can also block the sender from sending you another message by adding the sender's address to your blocked senders list (Junk Mail options in Microsoft Outlook). If you need assistance in performing these tasks, please feel free to contact the OIT Help Desk @4444.

In order to assist you in identifying known spam messages, below is the list of the ten most common spam subject lines received by the McAfee Security Center in the last 24 hours. Spam campaigns can change rapidly so any spam, or missed spam, you receive in your inbox may not necessarily correspond with the spam subjects in this list, as these subjects may be blocked by your Anti-Spam software if installed. If you receive any messages in your inbox with the following subject lines, please delete the email.

Construction Notice

As you may have noticed, several construction projects are underway on campus.  As with any construction project, on occasion there may be temporary unplanned power outages.  These power outages sometimes affect network connectivity.  Be assured that OIT will do the best we can to manage these unplanned outages but they are beyond our control.

Tips & Tid Bits:
from Microsoft
Managing Interruptions

Ever notice how much more you get done on the occasional day that you work away from the office? Ask anyone who's had a job in an office setting, and they'll tell you: There are days when you find yourself starting your to-do list at 4:30 P.M.

Where does the time go? A "quick" question from a colleague here, a drop-in-and-chat session from another there, a phone call, a never-ending flow of incoming e-mail. Add it all up, and you'll soon see how interruptions can consume your entire day.

Ole Miss Fraternity Loses Charter after MySpace posting

In previous writings, the Office of Information Technology has made an effort to advise the campus community against posting information and photos on social sites like MySpace.com and Facebook.com. The Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Mississippi recently learned this the hard way. On July 6, the Kappa Sigma Supreme Executive Committee revoked the fraternity's charter. A fraternity member posted photos on MySpace.com taken during a fraternity party in the 2005 spring semester where alcohol was served. The fraternity had been placed on probation for serving alcohol at a party in 2004 and this new violation occurred during the probationary period. The photos were incriminating enough that the committee felt they had no choice in the matter. The fraternity had been on the Ole Miss campus for over 80 years and had over 2,000 members. The chapter has 30 days to appeal the decision. For more information, see Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.
