Wireless is Coming!

Over the past several months, OIT has been working with Jackson based Business Communications, Inc (BCI) and Cisco to prepare the campus networking infrastructure to move forward with an enterprise-level wireless pilot project.  During the month of July, OIT will be completing the last leg of the project with the installation of wireless connectivity in the Union building.   This Union wireless pilot project will provide students, faculty, and staff with the ability to log on to the Internet without having to plug in to a data connection.  In order to obtain wireless connectivity laptops and personal digital assistants must be equipped with wireless networking cards.

The project will cover all three floors of the Union and provide ultimate flexibility for the campus in regards to wireless Internet access.  This first wireless project will be evaluated and other installations will follow as funding permits.  Look for future updates in the OIT newsletter.

Planned Power Outage
Saturday, June 24, 2006
until Monday, June 26,2006

The Kethley renovation project is moving forward! As renovations are now underway in Kethley, Robinson Electric must make some changes to the electrical infrastructure in the building. In order to make the required changes, Robinson Electric staff will be on site Saturday to turn off all power to Kethley while they make the required changes. Robinson anticipates that the changes will be complete and all services restored late Sunday afternoon or early Monday morning. As all of the campus technology production systems are housed in the machine room in Kethley, this electrical outage will require a complete system shut down of all campus technology systems including Banner, One Card, DSU Online, WebCT, all Web Services, RPT reports, etc.   It was determined that the weekend would provide for the least amount of disruption to the University.  We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Faculty Technology Institute
August & - 11, 2006

Delta State University's Faculty Technology Institute Program recently took first place in the Mississippi Best Practices Award Program for technology use in instruction.

The next Faculty Technology Institute will be held on August 7 - 11. During five days of training, institute participants and facilitators will be involved in three collaborative activities: interactive seminars, hands-on workshops, and individual coaching. The curriculum is targeted toward assisting faculty with specific goals they identify regarding online course revision and development. Each institute curriculum offers separate tracks for beginning and repeating WebCT instructors. Currently, three faculty facilitators and eight faculty members from eight different departments are engaged in pre-institute activities.

Interested faculty can contact Dr. Felix Rizvanov for more information.

The Faculty Technology Institute team recently presented at Mississippi 's Creating Futures through Technology Conference , 2006, Tunica, MS.  Next month the team is presenting the program as a Best Practices Showcase at the WebCT User Conference, 2006, Chicago , IL.
