SPAM King
Arrested
SPAM
is never ending battle. It seems like OIT is in constant battle to
reduce if not eliminate it. It is difficult because in many cases,
what scores high on the SPAM alert meter may in fact be warranted
email. OIT encourages you to use smart email habits and most
importantly do not sign up for subscriptions as these typically place you
on the SPAMMERS list. You should know that the Barracuda SPAM
Firewall in place on the DSU network actually stops about 90% of all
email coming to the DSU network. We may have some good news on this
front. Federal authorities have arrested one of the largest
SPAMMERS in the world. This will hopefully reduce the amount of
SPAM hitting our network. Let’s hope. Check out more on this
arrest at CNN.

Fraud Alert!
You
may have received an email this week claiming to come from Merchants
& Farmers (M&F) Bank. The Delta State University Police
Department has contacted M & F Bank and confirmed that this is not
an official communication from their organization. This is an
attempt by some unscrupulous individuals to trick email recipients into
providing confidential identity information to a bogus site on the
Internet. If you received this email, please do not follow any of
the procedures or links on the page. You should immediately
delete the email. Banks, credit cards, the Internal Revenue
Service and others will never solicit this type of information from you
via email. If you receive anything similar to this email from
other companies, the best course of action is to contact the phone
number where you normally do business and verify that they are asking
you for information. For further information on how to protect you
from Identity thieves see the
Federal Trade Commissions Identity Theft Site.

Reminder: Requests
for Software Installations in Computer Labs
OIT will be imaging
all computer labs during the late summer intersession in preparation for
the fall semester. If you are a faculty member teaching in these
facilities, it is critical that any requested changes be communicated in
writing along with the appropriately licensed software to OIT prior
to July 16, 2007. This will ensure that OIT has time to
confirm that it can be installed and work as expected prior to the start
of the fall semester. Please provide your changes to OIT prior to
the deadline so that we can make sure you have a successful start up for
fall semester. If you have changes or questions, please contact bfratesi@deltastate.edu.

Technology Term of the Week
|
(from Webopedia )
Click fraud is an illegal practice that
occurs when individuals click on Web site click through
advertisements (either banner
ads or paid text links) to increase the payable number of click throughs to the advertiser. The illegal clicks could
either be performed by having a person manually click the advertising hyperlinks or by using
automated software
or Online bots that are programmed to
click these banner ads and pay per click text ad links. Research has
indicated that click fraud is perpetrated by individuals who use click
fraud to increase their own personal banner ad revenues and also by
companies who use click fraud as a way to deplete a competitor's
advertising budget.
