Many Thanks to Our Student Technology Consultants

Congratulations to Richard Dixon who has completed well over 1000 technical support cases on the Delta State campus since his employment with OIT in August of 2002. Richard has proven to be a great asset to the department and the campus, and many of you have come to know him personally. Always congenial and capable of resolving any desktop support issue that comes his way, Richard will be missed next year. Richard will be graduating in May from DSU and we could not be more proud of all his accomplishments while at the University. We wish Richard all the best in his future endeavors.

Congratulations also to Murat Gur on completing his 500 th technical support case on the Delta State campus since August 2004. Murat has been an exceptional student employee and his technical services have proven invaluable to the campus during his time in OIT. Many faculty and staff have come to rely on Murat for his great technical skills and he is always a genuine pleasure to be around. Murat came to OIT from his native Turkey and has done a great job of making the Delta and DSU his home away from home. We look forward to working with Murat in the future.

Online Media and AV Request Available

The Office of Information Technology Help Desk is pleased to provide an online request system for AV/Media events for the Delta State community. This is the preferred method for equipment requests and reservations for the campus and will soon completely replace the paper system now on campus. This method allows the customer to submit their request online directly to our Help Desk and is copied to the customer. Once received at the Help Desk, the request will be included in our online HDO system and the customer will be contacted by our Help Desk for follow-up. This method will allow for electronic tracking of all media requests for the campus and also helps us to move towards a truly “paperless” work environment. All AV/Media equipment is available on a first-come first-serve basis, so we encourage you to make your requests as early as possible. Requests should be submitted no later than 72 hours in advance to allow OIT the opportunity to fulfill the request and meet your event needs. All OIT forms and information are accessible under the OIT website http://oit.deltastate.edu , or you can access the page directly at Media Services Reservation Form .

Replacement Cycle Update

The 2005-06 replacement cycle process is winding up. Several departments are scheduled for replacement over the next several weeks including the Airport, Commercial Aviation, Financial Aid, CIS, Accounting, Finance and Economics, Registrar's office and the Student Affairs offices. Groups already completed include the School of Nursing , the College of Education , the President's Office, Academic Affairs, and Human Resources. Overall, approximately 200 desktop computers will have been upgraded with new equipment during the 05-06 academic year. The computers that were removed from those offices have been redistributed into new labs or to replace older equipment on the campus as part of the used equipment replacement cycle.

Tips & Tid Bits:
from Microsoft

Microsoft Outlook Online Training Tip

Microsoft has some great online training tools that you can use at any time. Check out this session on the Streamlined Mail Experience using Outlook 2003. Outlook helps you read, organize, follow-up, and find e-mail messages more efficiently than before. The new window layout displays more information on the screen at one time, even on smaller monitors. The list of messages has been redesigned to use space more intelligently; as a result, you will spend less time scrolling and more time getting your work done. Automatic grouping of your messages helps you find and go to e-mail messages anywhere in the list more quickly than before; you can even move or delete all messages in a group at once!

Jobs @ OIT:
Student Employment Opportunity

The Office of Information Technology Help Desk has a several openings for regular student employees for the summer and fall semesters.  Ideally, we would like to have students confirmed for both semesters before the end of spring semester so that we can provide training before the employment period begins.   Our student technical consultants have a great opportunity to develop their technical skills as well as learning about customer support in the real world. We have multiple student employment positions open providing for a variety of experiences, including switchboard operator, desktop support, telecommunications support and help desk support. For further information see the MonsterTRAK job listings or come by Bailey 114 at your convenience to submit your application.

Campus Alert Notification System (C.A.N.S.)

OIT Network Services is pleased to announce the campus-wide implementation of an online emergency notification system. This system, known as C.A.N.S. (Campus Alert Notification System) is a custom written application that provides the DSU Police Department with emergency messaging to campus computers for weather emergencies, natural disasters, and other urgent communication needs. During times of emergency, the police department can now broadcast a pop-up message to the campus on their local desktops informing them of the emergency. Anyone who is logged into the University domain will receive the alert message. Unlike past systems, C.A.N.S. provides for an alert timeframe that will continue to provide the alert to anyone who logs onto the domain in the specified alert window. With past systems and commercial systems, only those persons logged onto the network at the time the message was broadcast would receive the message. This method provides for a greater communication path to the campus. In times of emergencies, you can now anticipate an alert message appearing on your desktop monitor form the police department.
