Maintenance Update:
Friday March 17

OIT must perform mandatory maintenance and updates on campus servers and other equipment and has scheduled a maintenance event during March.  In order to minimize disruption to the campus as a whole, this window has been scheduled for Friday, March 17 2006 from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m, the Friday of Spring Break.  Software updates for all Windows servers will be applied and some minor hardware changes will be implemented.  During this time, you may experience an interruption of service. Applications that may be affected include network access, network printing, web applications, and One Card access.  OIT will be sending more detailed information in the coming week.

Security Update:
Beware of Your Online Actions

Students across the country are fascinated with sites like Facebook, MySpace, BlackPlanet, Xanga and similar websites.  These sites allow virtually anyone to post information on the web including photos, personal thoughts, and very personal information.  What many fail to realize is that not only are these sites a serious security risk, but once the information is posted on the site, it could affect students for their entire life.  Students have been expelled from colleges and high schools for some of their postings and photographs, and many employers are now using these sites to screen applicants.  Even worse, some online predators are using the personal information found on these sites to stalk students.  One such incident at Virginia Commonwealth University was murdered by someone who obtained personal informaiton from her MySpace page.  Personal security is a serious issue and we discourage the use of these sites.
