Banner Unified Digital Campus (UDC) Day March 8-9

Banner UDC (Unified Digital Campus) day is set for March 8th and 9th in the State Room.  Sungard Higher Education will be here to help us better understand how Banner integrates with the day to day operations on campus and to help us to better utilize our Banner system.  The event is for all faculty, staff, and administrators with sessions that focus on different subject areas.  As defined by Sungard, a Unified Digital Campus (UDC) seeks to align and integrate the institution's technology solutions, processes and people.  The purpose of UDC day is to provide the DSU community with a better understanding of the solutions that comprise DSU's UDC.   The goal of Sungard is to assist DSU in utilizing the solutions within their UDC to the fullest extent so that the strategic initiatives, business objectives, processes, and procedures can be as efficient as possible.

What are the objectives of UDC Day?

  • Provide an understanding of the solutions that comprise Delta State University 's UDC
  • Demonstrate the integration components of these solutions
  • Discuss and demonstrate the integration between the Student, Financial Aid, Finance, Human Resources, and Advancement systems and the UDC
  • Address any issues to consider, best practices to follow, and ways to take advantage of the integration. Detailed scheduling information has been distributed to the campus via email.

For questions or inquiries regarding UDC Day, please contact OIT @4444.

Site Builder Toolkit Online Training Info

Delta State utilizes the Sungard Site Builder Toolkit 2.1 (SBT) for its website content management. The simple and intuitive SBT user interface facilitates web content management through:

Standardized page templates, including automated page headers and footers

Automated navigational content

Simple procedures for adding and editing page content, and for managing page organization

The content management approach to website development allows you to develop, edit, maintain and manage your department's content with minimal training and it requires no HTML experience.  The OIT website has numerous SiteBuilder Tutorials and SiteBuilder FAQs that you can access 24/7.  Check out some of these sites as they can probably answer any questions you might have about Site Builder.  For additional training for your department or yourself, contact the Help Desk @4444 to set up a training session.

Daylight Savings Time Issues

The Energy Policy Act was passed by Congress in August 2005.  This act changes the start and end time of Daylight Savings Time (DST) in the U.S.   The net effect is that DST will last four weeks longer than it has in the past.  Daylight Savings Time will begin March 11, 2007 and end on November 4, 2007.  The implications on technology from this change are significant.  While OIT has patched most of the campus servers to reflect this change, Microsoft is still working to resolve all of the issues that will occur will the various Microsoft products and most especially Microsoft Outlook.  Microsoft is advising that their customers take great care with any Outlook calendar items that are within this timeframe as they have not yet developed a clear method to ensure that your calendar and events will reflect the time change automatically.  OIT has been working with both Sungard and Microsoft representatives to identify all of the issues and potential fixes or patches that might need to be applied to various Microsoft products.   Additional information will be provided as it occurs.  To read more about the impact of the DST changes, see Microsoft's DST Update Page

Issue No. 74 - March 2, 2007

Difference between Spyware and a Virus

Do you know the difference between spyware and viruses?  These terms are often used interchangeably and while both can do serious harm to your computer, they are very different in the way they behave.  A computer virus spreads harm from one computer to another while spyware (or malware) gathers information about you without your knowledge.  To learn more about the two and how you can protect yourself, see Microsoft's Tutorial .

Getting Started with WebCT/Blackboard/CE

The WebCT upgrade and integration with Banner project is moving along very well.  The pilot program is working well and the test environment is up and running.  Work needs to begin on transitioning courses from WebCT 4.1 to the new Campus Edition 6.0 environment.  This work begins with faculty understanding the process and beginning to move courses to the new environment.  To help in this process, OIT staff will be conducting WebCT/ Blackboard CE 6 training sessions-- GETTING STARTED with WebCT/ Blackboard CE system—over the next month and half.

The training sessions will be conducted in OIT/TLC's Faculty Lab, Ewing 230, 12 noon – 1 pm , on the following dates:

March 1, 2 , 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30

If the dates above don't fit into your schedule, OIT can arrange training for your group or department.  Many sessions can be brought directly to your department or group.
