Warning: Microsoft Vista and Internet Explorer 7.0 (IE7.0)

Microsoft has released its new operating system, Microsoft Vista, accompanied by Internet Explorer 7.0. This system is a very new release and is not yet supported by many critical Delta State applications. At present, MyDSU, Banner, Blackboard/WebCT, SiteBuilder and several critical back-end systems are not compatible with Vista.

OIT recommends that you do not install either Vista or Internet Explorer 7 at this time. If you have installed either of these applications, you will not be able to use the DSU applications mentioned above, or you will experience technical issues when attempting to use these applications. OIT will continue to work with our respective vendors as they test the new operating system. For more information contact the Help Desk @ (662) 846-4444.

Apple Customers recommended wait to upgrade to Vista

According to the Apple Website:
iTunes 7.0.2 may work with Windows Vista on many typical PCs. Apple recommends, however, that customers wait to upgrade Windows until after the next release of iTunes which will be available in the next few weeks.

If you are upgrading to Windows Vista or have purchased a new computer with Windows Vista pre-installed, here is some information you may find helpful:

Compatibility with Windows Vista
Apple is preparing to address a number of iTunes compatibility issues in the next release of the software.

Some currently known compatibility issues with iTunes 7.0.2 and earlier versions include:

  • iTunes Store purchases may not play when upgrading to Windows Vista from Windows 2000 or XP.
  • iPod models with the "Enable Disk Use" option turned off may be unable to update or restore iPod software, and make changes to iPod settings.
  • iPod models configured to Auto Sync and have the "Enable Disk Use" option turned off may require being ejected and reconnected to resync.
  • Ejecting an iPod from the Windows System Tray using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature may corrupt your iPod. To always safely eject an iPod, choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes.
  • Cover Flow animation may be slower than expected.
  • Contacts and calendars will not sync with iPod.

Dial 4155 for emergency services on campus

For emergency services on campus, you must dial 9 to get an outside line, then 911. When dialing 9-911, calls are directed to the Bolivar County Sheriff's Department not DSU police. To contact the DSU police department, dial 4155.

Microsoft Exchange Temporary Outage

The campus experienced a brief loss of connectivity to the Microsoft Exchange server on Tuesday of this week. OIT worked to restore connectivity as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience as we worked to resolve the issues.

Issue No. 72 - February 9, 2007

Help from the Help Desk

Voice Mail:
Voice mail is available for departmental use. A voice mailbox can be added to any type of phone line on campus. Messages can be accessed by dialing in from any phone, anywhere, at any time. The cost to add this service is $48 per year for each voice mailbox, and is charged to the department's telephone local service account.

For more information on setting up voicemail, go online to
the OIT website.

Okra Server
Soon to be Decommissioned

The “Okra” server (not to be confused with OkraMail) which has served as both a repository for student web pages and as the method of authentication for the Cafeteria and Hill apartments dial-up modem bank will soon be brought off-line. The Okra server has been in production for fifteen years and is scheduled to be decommissioned during the next scheduled network outage - February 16, 2007. There are very few active pages remaining on this server. However, if you are the sponsor of a student organization that currently has a site hosted on this server, please contact the OIT Help Desk @4444 for assistance in relocating your organization's size to a new location.

Network Maintenance: Friday February 23, 4:00 PM to Saturday February 24, 4:00 PM - All Services Affected

OIT must perform mandatory maintenance and updates on campus servers and other equipment. In addition, changes have been made to Daylight Savings Time (as discussed in the January 26 Newsletter ) that require updates be made on every campus server. These updates will create brief interruptions on the Windows servers, but will require full system outages for all Banner and WebCT servers for an estimated period of 24 hours. Software updates for all Windows servers will also be applied and some minor hardware changes will be implemented. During this time, you will experience an interruption of service for the following areas:

Affected Services: Complete Outage

  • Banner and all related applications – Complete Outage
  • Blackboard/WebCT 4.1 and Blackboard CE 6.0 – Complete Outage
  • DSU Online Services

Affected Services: Brief Interruptions to the following Services

  • DSU Web Site

  • Microsoft Exchange Mail Server
  • Microsoft Active Directory (network access)
  • File and Print Services

  • OkraMail Student Mail Server

We appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure a safe, reliable network infrastructure for Delta State . If you have questions, please contact the OIT Help Desk @4444.
