Focus on Security:

Urgent! -  Bogus Emails Circulating on Campus – Again!!: DO NOT RESPOND

You may have received a message today in your University email that appears to come from helpdesk@deltastate.edu or from webmail.deltastate.edu.  THESE MESSAGES ARE NOT LEGITIMATE!!!  Bogus emails can look deceptively real.  There are some telltale signs that should alert you to a bogus email.  And remember, if it looks suspicious, it probably is and your best bet is to delete the email!

Signs of a bogus email:

  • Request from OIT, or a company IT department, requesting your username, password, or birth information
  • Online payment house or bank indicating there is a “problem with your account”
  • Emails requesting that you fax personal information
  • Notice from the FDIC that you have violated the Patriot Act
  • Tip: Look at the sending address – more often than not the email is not from a legitimate email address

These messages are NOT being sent from OIT.  Although we have blocked further emails from coming in, new ones will appear in the future as spammers are very creative.  Please do not respond to these emails and never provide anyone your login/password for any reason.  Even if you did not respond to the email, you can always change your password via either of these methods and we strongly encourage you to do so on a regular basis (instructions below).  The best course of action is to delete the message from your inbox immediately.  For further information on protecting yourself from Email Scams, check out OCC.Gov and AntiPhishing.Org

If you have questions or concerns, or need assistance in changing your password, please contact the OIT help desk @4444 or our office on campus.

If you have responded to these emails, you need to take immediate action and change your network password.

To change your Active Directory/ Network/Email password:

Option 1: While logged into your desktop, press CTRL+ATL+DEL and the Windows Security Screen will appears.  Select the “Change Password” option on the left side of the second row and you will be prompted to change your password.

Option 2:  If you are off-campus and need to change your email, please go to the link below and you will be able to reset it while off-campus.  Any changes you make here will be reflected when you return to campus as well.  https://passwordreset.deltastate.edu/
