Banner 101 (no prerequisite)

Banner is the primary administrative software utilized by DSU for conducting University business.  From student information, payroll, finance, and alumni, the Banner system incorporates every aspect of the University environment.  This session provides a general overview of the Banner system, including terminology, basic forms and how to obtain access to these forms. The session also covers how to report a problem, request a custom report, and utilize the Banner UDC online help system.

The Browser Issue Revisited
We have received a number of support calls regarding the use of Internet Explorer 7 and Blackboard CE6.  IE7 does not work reliably with Blackboard CE6.  This is a support mechanism of Blackboard and its products, not a decision made by the DSU OIT staff.  While we understand that you may like IE7, it remains unsupported in numerous applications by various manufacturers.  The DSU Blackboard login page explains in more detail and will help you run a browser check on your machine, but know that if you use Blackboard at DSU, you must use Internet Explorer 6.0, Firefox, or Safari
(Mac Users).

The Purge/ Non Payment
Student Business Services will purge unpaid student accounts this week. In Blackboard-CE6, purged students appear in the grade book as "inactive" (and are highlighted in red). Note that these students no longer have access to your course—and will not have access—until they have paid their fees. Please encourage them to contact the Business Office as soon as possible.

Banner 8 Coming Soon

Banner 8 is coming soon to a test environment near you!  A new version of Banner is now available.  In order to keep current with the new functionality and technology advancements with Banner, OIT is preparing to upgrade one of our TEST databases to Banner 8 in the very near future.  This will serve as a testing environment for users to get a feel for the enhancements made in Banner 8 and prepare for the University migration in 2009.  Look for announcements in the coming weeks as to the launch dates for the TEST environment for Banner 8.

Clean Access Tip–Staying Connected

Now that you've successfully connected your PC to the campus' Clean Access system, there are a couple of pit stops that you will need to make for continued use and access.

Anti-Virus software - It's very important that you download updates for your selected anti-virus software periodically.

Windows Updates - If you are a Windows user, and are prompted to download and install critical updates, it is highly recommended that you proceed with installing these updates.

If you do not keep your anti-virus software and your windows update current, you will be unable to access the wireless or wired network in the residence halls after a 30-day window.  Make sure you update your software!

If you are still experiencing problems with getting connected in the residence halls and/or the wireless network, please contact our 24/7 helpdesk using the information listed below.

 Okramail Tips & Tricks -
Deleted Folder

In order for your Okramail deleted messages to be completely deleted, you must empty the deleted folder after deleting emails from other folders.  Space will be reallocated once your emails are emptied from your email folder.  If you would prefer not to be required to run this process, there is an automated option (purge message) to have emails bypass the deleted folder and be permanently removed when deleted from the Inbox or other folders.

To set the purge setting: click on Preferences (bottom left hand corner), Under delete options, check purge message, click save.

This will permanently remove the message without sending to the deleted folder.  See Okramail FAQs for more information.
