Literacy Across the Curriculum (LACI)

Literacy Across the Curriculum:  Institute for Teachers of Grades 5-12, (LACI) will target 20 teachers in the Mississippi Delta area who will attend the 22-day institute.  The training will enable teachers in middle and secondary schools to effectively incorporate the teaching of literacy skills in their respective content areas.  Since reading is fundamental to success in content areas, building literacy skills will in turn improve students’ academic performance across the content areas.  The Institute’s design will be rigorous and broad in scope to enable both new and experienced teachers to attain highly qualified status according to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.  Participants will become skilled in aligning and using the Mississippi Curriculum Frameworks, test blueprints provided by the Mississippi Department of Education, and national standards.  The Institute will be a collaborative effort of the Delta State University College of Education and the Delta Area Association for the Improvement of Schools (DAAIS), with support from the College of Arts and Sciences.  While the Colleges are responsible for the professional preparation of middle level and secondary teachers, DAAIS is a consortium of 34 Delta school districts and facilitates the University/P12 partnership.
