Scholarships

Below are the scholarships and awards offered by the department.  These scholarships are in general awarded to current students in good standing that meet the relevant criteria.  The award recipient is chosen from the pool by committee.  Some of the awards are chosen jointly by the Department of Chemistry and Physics and the Department of Biological Sciences.

Chemistry Scholarships and Awards

Of the scholarships listed below, the Jesse White Science Scholarship and the I. Dean Spradling Science Scholarship are awarded jointly with the Department of Biological Sciences.

JESSE WHITE SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 1979 by alumni and friends in honor of Dr. Jesse White who served on the Delta State faculty as Professor of Biology. This is an endowment fund, the interest of which is available for an annual scholarship or stipend for advanced study. The recipient is to be a current DSU science major and is selected on the basis of scholarship, character, and need.

I.DEAN SPRADLING SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 2001 by I. Dean Spradling, a science alumnus of Delta State. This renewable scholarship is funded through the Endowment for the Sciences which was estab- lished through Mr. Spradling’s initiative. The recipient must be a natural science major and is selected based on need, initiative, character, and scholarship. Selection decisions are made by departmental committee.

JOE GREEVER ORGANIC CHEMISTRY AWARD

Dr. Joe C. Greever, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, Taught organic Chemistry in the Department of Physical Sciences at Delta State for 23 years.  A recipient of the Kossman Award, Dr. Greever was one of Delta State’s outstanding teacher.

Dr. Steven Clark initiated the award with a $5,000 gift to the foundation.  The award is based on a 3.5 GPA, a chemistry major, and one that shows promise in Organic Chemistry.  The student is selected by the Organic Chemistry instructor and is approved by the honors committee in the science department.

THE BEN BRANCH MEMORIAL CHEMISTRY AWARD

The Ben Branch Memorial Chemistry Scholarship is awarded to a student who excels in organic chemistry and is an outstanding student in academic achievement, work ethic, attitude and a general willingness to help fellow classmates.  The Scholarship was established by Dr. Frank and Mrs. Dixie Branch in memory of their son and may be up to $250/year.

THE CHEMISTRY AWARD

A Handbook of Chemistry and Physics presented to the outstanding student in a General Chemistry course, award donated by the Chemical Rubber Publishing Company.

JAMES SOUTHWORTH STEEN SCIENCE AWARD

This award goes to a graduate student in the Masters of Science in Natural Science program who demonstrates superior academic achievement and research skills in advance science courses.

JAMES ANTHONY SCARBOROUGH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Dr. Tony Scarborough was a Professor of Physics at Delta State University from 1969 until his retirement in 2001.  This scholarship was funded in his memory in 2016 with a $10,000 gift from his daughter, Shelley S. Tibbs.

The scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a BS in Chemistry with either a specific interest in physics or exceptional academic achievement in physics. Recipients must also have at least a 3.0 GPA in high school, meet all University scholarship guidelines, and uphold the guiding principles and core values of Delta State University.

Pre-Medical Scholarships and Awards

Theses scholarships are awarded jointly with the Department of Biological Sciences.

ROBERT L. ELLIOTT, M.D. AND MARY C. ELLIOTT, M.D. SCHOLARSHIP

Established by Dr. Robert L. Elliott and Dr. Mary C. Elliott in 1992. The nominee must be an outstanding full time student, currently enrolled at Delta State University, majoring in biology or chemistry, be of good character, and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Nominees must be recommended to the Elliott Committee by a biological or chemistry faculty member. Recipients, known as “Elliott Scholars”, shall receive a supplementary scholarship in an amount necessary to assure full coverage of tuition, fees, room and board, and a book allowance. This scholarship is renewable by recommendation of the Elliott Committee.

R.T. AND KATHRYN M. HOLLINGSWORTH SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior pre-medical student enrolled at Delta State University. The recipient will be selected based on the academic excellence. Preference is given to students who reside in the North Bolivar County School District.

FERRETTI-KARNSTEDT PREMEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 2004 by Mr. and Mrs. John Feretti. The recipient will be a full-time pre-medical science major who displays excellent academic potential.

THELMA BLOUNT WELLS PRE-MEDICAL SCHOLARSHIP

Established in memory of Thelma Blount Wells, a Cleveland resident and registered nurse, this scholarships supports a female pre-medical student.

Pre-Dental Scholarships and Awards

Theses scholarships are awarded jointly with the Department of Biological Sciences.

DISTRICT II DENTAL SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP

This $500 scholarship was established by the District II Dental Society of Mississippi. The scholarship is awarded annually to a senior pre-dental student who has an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and is a resident of Mississippi; however, preference is given to candidates who reside in District II. Also, financial need is a consideration in the selecting of the recipient. The Pre-Professional Committee at Delta State University and a representative of the District II Dental Society will serve as the selection committee for picking the recipient.

R.W. JOHNSON DENTAL SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded to an outstanding graduating pre-dental major who has been accepted to dental school. The scholarship is donated by the Johnson Dental Clinic in memory of Robert Wray Johnson, D.D.S.

GREG THARP PRE-DENTAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was made possible by a gift from Dr. Greg Tharp in support of pre-dentistry students at Delta State.  It is awarded to a full-time pre-dentistry student in good academic standing.

Pre-Pharmacy Scholarships and Awards

Theses scholarships are awarded jointly with the Department of Biological Sciences.

CARLA D. EVANS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established in 2013 in memory of Carla D. Evans. It is awarded to a current pre-pharmacy student in the latter stage of the pre-pharmacy program who has demonstrated high academic achievement and has demonstrated a strong interest in attending pharmacy school.
