Historical Sketch:

In 1973, Delta State College approved a research grant to make a photographic documentary of the Mississippi Delta. Dr. Pete Walker, Dean of Students, was named as project director. Bill McCaslin served as photographer. The result was over 3,000 photographs, negatives and slides of people, land, businesses, and buildings that provide a look inside the social and cultural life of the Delta.

Scope and Content:

The collection is divided into series:

Series 1 contains contact sheets and negatives to the prints. These are housed in binders. Box 6

Series 2 consists of the majority of photographs shot by Bill McCaslin and Pete Walker during the project. The series is subdivided into black and white and color prints. Boxes 1 – 3.

Series 3 consists of the photographs that were exhibited in the Deltascapes exhibit at the Capps Archives and Museum in 1999. These are matted and mounted. The series also contains "showprints" from other exhibitions. These are mostly oversized. Boxes 4 – 7.

Series 4 contains slides made from the shots taken during this project. Box 8.
