America Reads Mississippi AmeriCorps Program

Mission

Tutors with a Mission-America Reads-Mississippi is dedicated to improving the reading skills of students, encouraging public awareness and support of literacy, and helping to increase the number of certified teachers in Mississippi.

Program Description

America Reads Mississippi (ARM) is a national service program often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps. ARM is the largest AmeriCorps program of its kind in the nation with 350 full-time members serving in 85 schools across the state. ARM members (1) tutor 1st-3rd grade students during the regular school day, before school, and in the summer (2) recruit volunteers and implement local community service projects and (3) engage students in service learning citizenship projects. The DSU Region has 51 members in 16 school sites serving in 8 counties in the MS Delta.

Program Success

DSU ARM members have conducted and participated in several National Service Projects and various community projects. The following numbers represent service activity for member projects from August 2011-January 2012.

  • The total number of volunteers of all ages who were recruited, coordinated, or supported by ARM DSU program staff and AmeriCorps members is 15,180.
  • The total number of hours served by volunteers recruited by ARM DSU AmeriCorps members is 29,275.
  • The total number of individuals that have benefited from ARM DSU members service projects and community activities are 46,709.
