America Reads Mississippi AmeriCorps Program
Tutors with a Mission-America Reads-Mississippi is dedicated to improving the reading skills of students, encouraging public awareness and support of literacy, and helping to increase the number of certified teachers in Mississippi.
America Reads Mississippi (ARM) is a national service program often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps. ARM is the largest AmeriCorps program of its kind in the nation with 350 full-time members serving in 85 schools across the state. ARM members (1) tutor 1st-3rd grade students during the regular school day, before school, and in the summer (2) recruit volunteers and implement local community service projects and (3) engage students in service learning citizenship projects. The DSU Region has 51 members in 16 school sites serving in 8 counties in the MS Delta.
DSU ARM members have conducted and participated in several National Service Projects and various community projects. The following numbers represent service activity for member projects from August 2011-January 2012.
