The Office of Information Technology (OIT) offers the Respondus LockDown Browser to Delta State University faculty and students. Lockdown Browser is a secure web browser for taking quizzes in online courses that prevents the user from accessing other programs or web pages while taking a quiz. Quizzes designed to be taken in Respondus LockDown Browser cannot be accessed through a standard web browser.
Canvas permits the use of Respondus LockDown Browser, a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When students use Respondus LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another website, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading. Respondus LockDown Browser is not intended to replace the browser used by faculty or students within Canvas. Canvas Quizzes must be specifically configured to require Respondus LockDown Browser.
Faculty wishing to use Respondus Lockdown browser, must participate in a training session with Instructional Technology staff prior to use. In training faculty will receive instructions and access codes for downloading the browser. Training for the software will be offered at various times in the monthly training schedule. Faculty who cannot attend training at those times should contact IT to schedule an individual consultation.
Students will have access to Respondus Lockdown Browser Guide through the Student Orientation located in the Help button inside Canvas. However, IT strongly suggests that faculty using Respondus Lockdown Browser provide students with an orientation to the software before administering their first exam.
